Background
It started at the library. The books about Cambodia mostly targeted adults and older children. The children’s titles were just a handful. Now those are just the English books. If you take a look at the Spanish books about Cambodia, the prospects are worst.
Our family is diverse, American with Cambodian and Mexican heritage. Literature is not as diverse. We know there are other families like ours and we want to give that representation in children’s literature. So that’s why our books are in Cambodian (Khmer), English and Spanish.
Currently our collection focuses on board books. These books are fun introductions to Cambodian culture. Our next step is to highlight experiences. So we want to create picture books with characters of mixed Cambodian and Latino heritage. We also want to highlight and make more accessible other diverse authors by curating books for sale at pop-up markets.
